April 17, 2024The inspiration for the branding behind Fiordland College's PB4L programme was obvious. The school is situated in a scenic wonderland. Lake Te Anau is on its doorstep, the surrounding mountains offer spectacular views and forests and birdlife are unlike anywhere in the world. What a beautiful location for a school.
The college utilises its unique location to explore the curriculum in more detail. The idea of a 'moral compass' was used to help facilitate this exploration.

Their PB4L Programme
Fiordland College's PB4L values are Respect, Integrity, Curiosity and Effort. They call them their 'RICE Values'. Given that there are four, it was easy to use the four areas on a compass for the strategic placement of each of their values. These were based on aspects of the natural environment.

The PB4L Values & Their Meanings
Below are the meanings behind each of the values and how they applied to student life at Fiordland College. Posters were created with information that changed depending on their location. These were positioned in strategic places around the school like student bathrooms, walkways and on walls in the school grounds.

Mt Luxmore
Our maunga and the symbol of Fiordland College. The college comprises of the grounds, buildings, staff and students. All are deserving of respect.

Native Plants
Native plants such as mamaku (NZ black tree fern) harakeke (NZ Flax) demonstrate integrity via their ability to adapt to the conditions around them and flourish. Fiordland College students stay true to who they are even if the world around them changes.

Lake Te Anau
The largest lake in the south island and considered an important source of food and resources by Ngai Tahu. The lake symbolises opportunities for curious minds to explore the depths of learning and life.

Kea
Considered the world’s smartest bird, Keas are productive and intelligent creatures. Fiordland College students navigate their pathways in life with with a growth mindset that is ready to face the challenges of life.
